Tibet in Winter: Ten Days on the Roof of the World

Fly to Chengdu after work on 24 Dec, sleep there and collect your Tibet permit, then go up to the plateau on the 26th. Four nights in Lhasa to acclimatise slowly: the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, the monks' debate at Sera, and a day out to Yamdrok Lake. Then the Lhasa–Nyingchi railway down to Nyingchi (only 2,900 m) for New Year, with Namcha Barwa and the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. Back to Lhasa on 2 Jan, wheels up at noon on the 3rd, home in the small hours of the 4th. A Singapore passport needs an agency-issued Tibet Travel Permit plus a guide and vehicle throughout, and the whole route is built around that rule.

Tibet Travel Permit, the 2026 rules:
① A Singapore passport counts as foreign. No independent travel in Tibet: the permit must be applied for by a licensed Tibet travel agency, and a licensed guide and vehicle accompany you throughout; you cannot apply to the Tibet Tourism Bureau yourself. Singaporeans have 30-day visa-free entry to China (through 31 Dec 2026), so a scan of the passport data page is all the agency needs.
② The permit is only couriered to mainland-China addresses, and the original is checked at check-in for the Chengdu→Lhasa flight. The agency sends it to the Chengdu hotel you are sleeping in on 25 Dec (give them the hotel booking confirmation); hand-over at Chengdu airport can also be arranged.
③ Outside Lhasa (Shannan for Yamdrok Lake, and Nyingchi) you also need the Alien's Travel Permit, ¥50 per person, which the guide obtains in Lhasa the same day with your original passport; you only hand it over for a few hours.
④ Timeline: about 8–10 working days to issue plus 3–5 days courier; agencies ask for documents 20+ days ahead. For this trip, send everything by 24 Nov, permit issued by 12 Dec, at the Chengdu hotel by 20 Dec, and phone the hotel on 22 Dec to confirm it has arrived.
⑤ The permit lists your exact itinerary and entry/exit dates; changing the route means reapplying.

There is no nonstop Singapore–Lhasa, and no single-ticket routing shows on Google for 24 Dec, so the trip is two tickets: SIN→Chengdu and Chengdu→Lhasa. Chengdu–Lhasa has a dozen daily flights (Sichuan Airlines, Air China, Tibet Airlines); the times above are from the published 2026 schedule, recheck before ticketing. The return is the 12:05 daytime flight: Lhasa airport gets windy in the afternoon and morning departures are the most reliable.

  • 12:35Land at Gonggar Airport (3,570 m). The guide meets you with a name board; 60 km on the airport expressway, about an hour into the city. The first deep breath feels thin. That is normal.
  • 14:00Check in at the Shangri-La. Three jobs today: walk slowly, drink water, and skip the hot shower (at least tonight). Rooms have piped oxygen if your head feels heavy.
  • 18:30Light dinner in the hotel, early night. Broken sleep and a mild headache are normal; if the headache gets worse, you vomit, or you cannot walk straight, have the guide take you to the Tibet People's Hospital (24 h) immediately.
  • Not today: the Potala, stairs, or any monastery. Patience on day one decides the next nine.

  • 14:30Drive to Sera Monastery (色拉寺, 5 km north). The debating courtyard opens at 15:00, Monday to Saturday: monks clapping and arguing scripture. Stay an hour. Winter ticket S$5 (¥25)2025 low-season price.

Yamdrok Lake day trip

Shangri-La · night 4
  • 08:30Depart. The guide obtained your Alien's Travel Permit for Shannan the day before. Lhasa to the Kamba La pass is about 100 km and 2 hours, climbing from 3,650 to 4,998 m: stay awake in the car and sip water.
  • 10:30Kamba La viewpoint (冈巴拉山口): the whole of Yamdrok (羊卓雍措) below you, a blue that does not look real; in winter the lake is only partly frozen and the colour is even deeper. Winter platform fee S$11 (¥60)2025 low-season price; A-grade sites are free during the winter scheme2026–27 not yet announced. Twenty minutes is enough: it is windy, cold and thin up there.
  • 11:30Down to the shore and along the lake towards Nagarze for lunch in a village. A photo with a yak by the water is about ¥20.
  • 15:30Back in Lhasa. This is the highest point of the whole trip; most people find Lhasa feels comfortable afterwards.
  • Swap rule with 28 Dec: the Potala goes on whichever day the reservation lands, Yamdrok takes the other.
