Why leave on 2 Jan: Europe to Singapore is an overnight flight, and everything departing Zürich on 3 Jan lands on the 4th, which is no way to start a working week. So it is 8 nights in Switzerland (25 Dec–2 Jan), flying out of Zürich on Saturday 2 Jan. The two returns: SIA's 10:15 nonstop gets you home at dawn on Sunday with a whole day to recover, but leaves only breakfast on the 2nd; Oman Air at 20:35 gives you the full day in Zürich and lands at 19:40 Sunday evening. Airport to town: the railway station is under the terminal, 10–15 min to Zürich Hauptbahnhof every 10 min, S$11 (CHF 7.20)verified; buy a single on arrival day, the Swiss Travel Pass covers the ride back out on 2 Jan.

Nothing departing before 19:00 on 24 Dec works, that is office hours. Fares are from Google Flights on 5 Sep 2026; the SIA nonstop was unpriced, check the airline site or the Google link. Christmas-week fares to Europe only go up, so book the week you settle the route.

2. Day by Day

Thu 24 Dec

Departure

Overnight flight
  • 19:00Dinner after work, then Changi. For Etihad's 19:25 you need to be at the airport by 17:00; if that is too tight, take SIA at 01:30 or Qatar at 20:15. For SIA, arriving at Terminal 3 by 23:00 is relaxed.
  • Before boarding, install SBB Mobile (the Swiss railways app: timetables, tickets, platforms) and load the Swiss Travel Pass e-ticket. Screenshot every confirmation, hotels, the Jungfraujoch seat reservation, the Peak2Peak ticket; there is no signal on the mountain and they still want to see it.
  • Passport valid more than 3 months beyond 2 Jan (MFA recommends 6); Singapore passports are visa-free in Schengen for 90 days, and ETIAS is not live in 2026 (see “Before You Land”).

Christmas Day in Zürich: the old town in snow, the lights on

The Christkindlimarkt inside the station packed up on 24 Dec and Bellevue Noël by the opera house ended on the 23rdverified 2026 dates, so the markets are gone, but the “Lucy” lights along the Bahnhofstrasse stay on into early January (5–6 Jan in 2025–26; 2026–27 dates pending).

The Dolder Grand Book 1 Jan OfficialThe 1899 building on the Adlisberg with Norman Foster's wings and a 4,000 m² spa, the right place to lie down while the city is closed on New Year's Day; 25 min by taxi to the airport. Budgeted at S$1,408 (CHF 900) a nightestimateRadisson Blu Zurich Airport / Hyatt Regency Zurich Airport The Circle (stay at the airport if you take SIA's 10:15 and buy yourself an extra hour of sleep)

26 Dec–2 Jan is the most expensive and fullest week of the Alpine year, and five-stars in Zermatt and Grindelwald often insist on a full week. The Google Hotels links carry the dates; where no rate shows, e-mail to ask whether two nights are possible and what the New Year's Eve gala costs. Lock all five on free-cancellation rates; January 2027 rates usually open 3–6 months out, so re-shop once they do.

7. Risks and Backups

RiskBackup
Hotels full over New Year, or five-stars insisting on 5–7 nightsE-mail now about two nights; in Zermatt fall back to CERVO, Riffelalp or The Omnia, in Grindelwald to the Schweizerhof or the Victoria-Jungfrau in Interlaken; worst case, one night in Zermatt on 30 Dec and New Year's Eve in Zürich for the Silvesterzauber lakeside fireworks (00:20, free)
Heavy snow or wind closes the Jungfraujoch or Glacier Paradise liftsJungfraujoch is on the 29th and can swap with the afternoon of the 28th; the Gornergrat is a rack railway and runs in wind, so if Glacier Paradise is shut do the Gornergrat only (Peak2Peak can be refunded or changed); check jungfrau.ch and matterhornparadise.ch before setting out
Shops closed on 25, 26 Dec, 1 and 2 JanThose four days are already mountains, lakes and spas; shopping is 28–31 Dec (village shops in Grindelwald and Zermatt open through the holidays) and the airport
Reduced trains at Christmas and New YearSwiss holidays run on Sunday timetables: main lines as normal, half the frequency; check the SBB app the night before and watch last departures on mountain branch lines
Altitude (Jungfraujoch 3,454 m, Glacier Paradise 3,883 m)Both are mostly indoors; walk slowly, drink water, and take the next train down at the first sign of trouble; the Gornergrat at 3,089 m is gentler
ETIAS goes live unexpectedlyThe EU has withdrawn its 2026 target and 2027 is expected; check travel-europe.europa.eu again in November, and if it is live the online application is €20 and approved in minutes
Missing SIA's 10:15 on 2 JanThe Dolder is 25 min from the airport, but taxis are scarce the morning after New Year, so book the car the night before, or simply stay at the airport Hyatt Regency The Circle
Every Zermatt restaurant sold out on New Year's EveBook in November; failing that, the hotel gala; buy late-night snacks at Coop before it closes on the afternoon of the 31st

New Year's Eve galaabout CHF 350 per personS$548Typical range for a Zermatt five-star gala; awaiting the hotel's quoteestimate

About S$10,400 per person, S$20,799 for two. Carry CHF 300 (S$469) cash each as a float, not counted above.

Hotels (S$6,024) are 58% of the per-person total and the big number on this route; flights are only S$1,287. Savings in order: drop each hotel one tier (Storchen, Schweizerhof Luzern, Schweizerhof Grindelwald, CERVO, the airport Hyatt) for about S$1,878 per person; 2nd class on the Swiss Travel Pass saves S$404; a restaurant set menu instead of the gala halves that line. Swiss prices: mineral water CHF 4, coffee CHF 5, a main course CHF 30–50, taxis CHF 6 flagfall plus CHF 4 per km, so CHF 60–80 per person per day for food is realistic, not conservative. Rate 2026-09-05, 1 CHF = 1.5648 SGD.

9. Before You Land

ItemWhat to doStatus
Visa / SchengenSingapore passports enter Switzerland visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180, no work; the passport must be valid more than 3 months beyond departure (MFA recommends 6). See the MFA Switzerland page.verified
ETIAS (EU travel authorisation)Not needed in 2026. The EU had targeted the last quarter of 2026; in July 2026 its website dropped that date and now says only that a start will be announced months in advance, eu-LISA has judged a 2026 launch unfeasible, and the trade expects 2027. Check the official EU site again in November; if it is live by then, the online application is €20, usually approved in minutes, valid 3 years. Never pay a third-party site.verified, status as of Sep 2026
EES border registrationThe EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026: on first entry to Schengen you give fingerprints and a facial image at a kiosk, passports are no longer stamped, and Switzerland takes part. Allow an extra 30 min at Zürich Airport.verified
Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare CardThe 8-day consecutive pass wins on this route (see the tickets table); the Half Fare Card rose to CHF 150 in 2026 and suits trips with little rail and many mountain tickets. Keep the pass e-ticket on your phone and show it with your passport.verified
SBB Mobile appThe Swiss railways app: live times and platforms for every train, boat, bus and cable car in the country, and it sells tickets. Link a card before you fly. Holidays run on Sunday timetables, so check the night before.verified
Plugs and voltageSwitzerland uses Type J three-round-pin sockets at 230 V; Singapore's Type G will not fit, so bring 1–2 Type J adapters (a two-pin Europlug works directly).verified
Paying and tippingCards everywhere (Visa / Mastercard, Apple Pay is universal); pay in francs and decline “charge in SGD” dynamic conversion. Restaurant bills include service; the custom is to round up or add 5–10%; CHF 2–5 for taxis and porters.verified
Sunday and holiday closuresSundays plus 25 and 26 Dec, 1 and 2 Jan (canton of Zürich): shops and supermarkets close, only station shops and convenience stores open; restaurants and museums post their own hours. The itinerary already works around it.verified
Mobile dataSwitzerland is outside the EU roaming zone, so check that your Singapore carrier's Europe pack includes it, or buy an Airalo / Ubigi Switzerland eSIM. Trains have free SBB Wi-Fi and most summit stations have signal.carrier packs not verified
Emergencies and the mission112 works Europe-wide; in Switzerland police 117, ambulance 144, Rega mountain rescue 1414. Singapore has no embassy in Bern; consular help comes from the Permanent Mission in Geneva (as the MFA Switzerland page states), Avenue du Pailly 10, 1219 Châtelaine, +41 22 795 01 01address and number from a directory, to confirm.verified: 112 / Geneva
