AirAsia SIN→Kuala Lumpur (KUL)→New Chitose (CTS), one stop, one ticket, bags checked through
S$808verified Cheapest, but the 4th becomes a working day on no sleep Compare on Google
Why AirAsia first: there is no nonstop from Singapore to Sapporo; every New Chitose flight connects once. AirAsia is a single ticket with bags checked through and an airside transfer at Kuala Lumpur; landing at 17:00, the JR Rapid Airport has you in Sapporo in 37 minutes for the last night of the Odori Park illumination on 25 Dec. Scoot plus a domestic flight looks similar on paper but is two separate tickets: a Scoot delay that misses the domestic leg is your loss, and Narita means immigration, bags and a fresh check-in. T'way via Incheon lands earliest but costs S$217 more for half a day of shopping. Coming home on 3 Jan at 10:10: a Rapid Airport from Sapporo Station around 06:00 reaches New Chitose just after 07:00, plenty of time; if you would rather not rise early, spend the night of 2 Jan at the Air Terminal Hotel inside the New Chitose terminal.
Nothing departing before 19:00 on 24 Dec works (office hours). Fares are from Google Flights on 5 Sep 2026; year-end flights into Hokkaido only get dearer, and AirAsia's Kuala Lumpur–Sapporo leg does not fly every day, so book the week you settle the route. The Narita→New Chitose domestic fare is a peak-season projection; Peach's off-peak floor is ¥7,350.
2. Day by Day
Weather at each stop
Daily forecasts appear automatically from 16 days before departure (Open-Meteo); use them to watch for heavy snow at New Chitose on 25 Dec, a Hokuto suspension on the 29th and wind in Niseko on the 31st. Sapporo's December averages are 2 °C by day and −4 °C at night with over a metre of snow on the ground by month end; Hakodate is a little milder; Niseko drops to −15 °C at night.

Departure
Overnight flight
20:30Dinner after work, then Changi Terminal 4 for AirAsia. Depart 23:30; the Kuala Lumpur connection is airside with no bag collection, landing at New Chitose (新千歳空港) at 17:00 on 25 Dec. Budget carrier: add 20 kg checked baggage each. Ski gear is rented in Niseko, so leave it at home.
Before boarding, finish Visit Japan Web (the immigration and customs QR codes) and set up Welcome Suica Mobile on your iPhone with ¥5,000 loaded; it works on JR Hokkaido, the Sapporo subway, convenience stores and the Hakodate tram.
Screenshot every confirmation: JR Hokkaido reserved seats, the Hakodate→Niseko bus, the Niseko→Sapporo bus. The mountains have no signal and still want to see them.

Hakodate Kokusai Hotel (6 min from the warehouses, 435 rooms, one tier cheaper); Four Points Flex Hakodate Station (new and cheap, but away from the bay)
Ski-in ski-out at the foot of Grand Hirafu with an onsen and ski valet; the New Year fireworks and torchlight descent are at the door, and Yamada Shrine and the Hirafu crossroads restaurants are a walk away. New Year's Eve is Niseko's dearest night of the year, assumed S$892 (¥110,000) a nightestimate; no published rate, and it usually sells out six months ahead.
The Green Leaf Niseko Village (Hilton's Tapestry brand, ski-in ski-out with onsen; the Village has its own fireworks; about S$568 (¥70,000) a nightestimate); Hilton Niseko Village (gondola at the door)
Out the door before 06:00 for the airport rapid; staying on top of the station is the simplest. About S$243 (¥30,000) a nightestimate
Mitsui Garden Hotel Sapporo (4 min from the west exit, renovated Feb 2026); Air Terminal Hotel New Chitose (inside the terminal, zero risk for the 10:10 flight)
28 Dec–3 Jan is Japan's peak homecoming and New Year week: Sapporo and Hakodate rates run 40–70% above normal, onsen ryokan charge special year-end tariffs, and Niseko's two New Year nights are the year's top price and the first to sell out. Lock all five stops on free-cancellation rates now, and re-shop once year-end rates are released (usually 3–6 months out). The Google Hotels links carry the dates; Niseko hotels publish no rate card, so check Google or Trip.com for live prices.

Risk

Heavy snow at New Chitose: about 160 flights cancelled on 14 Dec 2025 and 25 more on 26 Decverified, news reports
If the outbound AirAsia is cancelled, rebook the next day (its KUL–CTS leg does not fly daily, so check China Airlines / T'way first); insurance must cover cancellation. If the 3 Jan morning flight goes, take China Airlines at 14:40 or Scoot at 18:40, worst case the first flight on the 4th
JR limited expresses suspended in a blizzard (it happens every winter)
Sapporo→Noboribetsu has the Donan Bus “Kosoku Onsen-go”, one departure at 13:40, ¥3,200; Noboribetsu→Hakodate has no direct bus, so stay an extra night and go the next day; Sapporo↔Hakodate has the Chuo highway bus, 5h55, ¥3,530–5,990
The 31 Dec Hakodate→Niseko bus is full, or does not run in 2026–27
JR Hakodate→Oshamambe on the Hokuto, a local up the Hakodate Main Line to Kutchan (only a few trains a day), then the bus into Hirafu; or the Hokuto back to Sapporo and the Chuo Bus to Niseko; failing that a charter, about ¥60,000estimate
Niseko's New Year rooms are gone or absurd
The Green Leaf or the Hilton at Niseko Village (same fireworks); failing that, see the year in at Hakodate: the ropeway stops at 19:00 on the 31st so there is no midnight view, but Goryokaku Tower opens at 06:30 on 1 Jan for the first sunrise and lights up at midnightverified, 2026 New Year programme
Wind closes the lifts, or one of you cannot ski at all
Grand Hirafu's base family slopes and the Hanazono tube park keep going; if the lifts stop, Yukoro Onsen and lunch in Kutchan town; a GoSnow group lesson saves hours of falling over
Year-end closures: small shops, markets and restaurants shut widely 31 Dec–3 Jan
The plan already puts the Otaru cruise (no sailings 31 Dec–1 Jan), Mt Moiwa (closed 31 Dec–1 Jan), the Old Public Hall (closed 31 Dec–3 Jan) and the morning market (closed 1 Jan) before the 30th; Niseko is an international resort and trades as normal; convenience stores never close
JR Hokkaido limited expresses are all-reserved and sell out at year-end
Buy at 10:00 JST on 28 and 29 Nov, the day sales open; if nothing is left, there is no unreserved car on the Hokuto, so switch to the bus or another departure
Driving on snow: foreign visitors' winter accident rate is reported at four times the local rate, and about 70% of Hokkaido winter crashes involve foreign self-driversmedia reports, not individually verified
This trip is all JR and bus, no car; inside Niseko use the resort shuttles and your feet
−15 °C frostbite and falls
No bare skin for more than 15 minutes; cleats in the pocket; keep the phone against your body, it shuts down in the cold
Language: the Noboribetsu bus, the Hakodate Teisan bus and local Niseko shops are Japanese only
Download the Japanese offline pack in Google Translate; let hotel front desks make the phone bookings; emergencies are 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance

Arrival
Singapore passports get 90 days visa-free. Register passport, flight and hotel on Visit Japan Web before you fly; it produces one QR code for immigration and one for customs, with dedicated lanes at New Chitose. Without it you still get in, just via paper forms and a long queue.

Suica on iPhone
Install JR East's Welcome Suica Mobile (iPhone XR or later, iOS 17.2+): set a keyword and the card is issued on the spot, valid 180 days, no deposit, top up with Apple Pay; it works on Sapporo's JR, subway and tram, the Hakodate tram and every convenience store. Android users buy a physical Kitaca or Welcome Suica at New Chitose. The Noboribetsu bus and some Niseko buses are cash only.

Is a rail pass worth it?
The 5-day Hokkaido Rail Pass at ¥22,000 is not: this trip's JR legs total about ¥16,700. The 4-day Sapporo–Noboribetsu Area Pass at ¥10,000 pays off if it covers the New Chitose, Otaru and Noboribetsu legs (¥14,380); confirm the coverage on the JR Hokkaido site before you go.
