Changbaishan & Harbin: Twelve Winter Days
Leave the office early on 24 Dec for an 18:00 departure, spend the night and most of Christmas Day in Shanghai, and land at Changbaishan on the evening of the 25th. Three nights at the Wanda resort: two days of skiing, the Hanna hot spring, a snowmobile up the West Slope to Heaven Lake. A 90 km private car into Erdaobaihe for three more nights at the booked Renjoy: the whole North Slope, rime ice at Mojie, a winter raft. On 31 Dec a four-hour train into Harbin for New Year's Eve at Ice and Snow World, then the Snow Expo, Siberian tigers, the morning market and Saint Sophia. The return is booked: fly to Xi'an on the evening of 3 Jan, overnight at the airport, land in Singapore at midday on the 4th. Snow Town and Yabuli are out this time: seven hours in a car would burn a whole day.

All four are now booked: three hotels, the outbound and the return. The outbound went through on Jettzy for 24 Dec — China Eastern MU6050 18:00 Changi T3 → 23:20 Pudong T1, an 18h10 layover, then MU6917 17:30 → 20:20 into Changbaishan the next day, S$642.03 paid. 🕐 Retimed by China Eastern on 16 Oct, accepted: MU6917 was 06:50 → 09:20 and is now 17:30 → 20:20; same route, same airline, same seats, so none of Jettzy's three reissue triggers (connection broken, new connecting city, new carrier) applies and the ticket stands. China Eastern offers a free change or refund, but all three hotels are non-refundable on unchanged dates, and rerouting through another city plus a train would only add a winter connection, so the new time is accepted. The cost is the two-hour warm-up ski on the afternoon of the 25th; the gain is that the tightest link of the trip (Pudong counters opening at 06:00 for a 06:50 departure) is gone, along with the night on airport benches. Landing on the 25th still means three nights at Wanda, six at Changbaishan in total. The handwritten plan marks 25–27 Dec as ski days and 28–30 as non-ski; with the late arrival the skiing is now 26–27 Dec, otherwise as on this page; only Heaven Lake / waterfall / hot springs shifted by a day to follow the hotels: the North Slope waterfall and Julong springs sit on 29 Dec (staying at Renjoy, at the north gateway) and the West Slope summit stays on 27 Dec (still at Wanda). ✅ Ticketed, and on a single ticket: the e-itinerary came through the same day with both a ticket number and a China Eastern airline reference, and both legs share one ticket number — so if the first leg runs late, rebooking the second is China Eastern's problem, not a fare you buy again. Seats 43-L and 35-L. (The numbers stay off this public page; they are on the itinerary in your inbox.) 🔴 You collect your own bag at Pudong: in China an international-to-domestic connection always means clearing immigration, reclaiming the bag, passing customs and checking in again, so nothing is through-checked to Changbaishan. With the new times you land 23:20 and leave 17:30 the next day: clear arrivals, take the bag to an airport hotel for a full night, and be back at T1 domestic check-in by 15:00 on the 25th. 🔴 Leave the office early on 24 Dec: an 18:00 departure means being at Changi T3 by 16:00.
No nonstop from Singapore to Harbin or Changbaishan on the outbound dates (checked 24–27 Dec day by day); every routing has one stop, you and your friend are on the same 18:00 departure on the 24th. The return is booked via Xi'an, landing Changi 12:55 on Monday 4 Jan, so plan for an afternoon start at work.
Schedules and the price graph first. 🔴 Not the full list: it showed a single combination that day (23:00 out) and never listed the 18:00 MU6050 that was actually bought, and the price reads “unavailable” — China Eastern does not sell this through Google, so it can neither price nor fully list the route
Through fares mixing an international and a domestic leg show up best here, and all three hotels are already on it. I built these URLs to their standard format; they would not open in my browser, so they are unverified

The ticket is issued; this section is kept for reference. What was actually bought: Jettzy, China Eastern MU6050 + MU6917, out 18:00 on 24 Dec, in 20:20 on the 25th (retimed by China Eastern on 16 Oct, was 09:20), S$642.03 all in (fare 433.13 + taxes 196.90 + seats 12). Trip.com quoted SGD 712 per person for the same flights, S$70 more. 🧱 One mistake worth recording: this page used to say there was exactly one combination that day, departing 23:00, on the strength of Google Flights — but China Eastern does not sell this routing through Google, so that list was never complete, and there was also an 18:00 departure. The lesson: if a channel cannot price a route, assume it cannot list it fully either.Still tempted by somewhere else in China? Since China Eastern moved MU6917 to 17:30 on 16 Oct, the daytime of the 25th is already free in Shanghai: half a Christmas Day in the city with no ticket change.

15:00Leave the office for Changi T3. China Eastern checks in on the departures level; find the island from the flight information screens. When you drop the bag, ask whether it can be through-checked to Changbaishan — both legs are on one ticket, so it is worth asking, but international-to-domestic in China normally means collecting it at Pudong. Plan to carry it.

23:20Land at Pudong T1. Follow the transfer / domestic connection signs: health screening, immigration, down to the baggage hall to collect your bag, customs, then out into arrivals. You use the Chinese national channel; your friend uses the foreign passport lanes, with fingerprints and an arrival card.
00:30Out through arrivals to an airport hotel for a full night. China Eastern moved the second leg to 17:30 on the 25th, so the 7h30 layover is now 18 hours and there is no reason to sit it out in the terminal: book a hotel by Pudong airport for the night of the 24th and take the bag with youto book. As a fallback, T1 and T2 have 11 free 24-hour shower rooms and 8 free rest zones, and the sleep pods run S$56(¥299) for 8 hours2025 airport and press reports.
Before boarding, set up the China apps: 12306, Trip.com/Ctrip, Amap and WeChat (Changbaishan park and Ice and Snow World tickets are sold in mini-programs); link a foreign card to WeChat Pay or Alipay and test one payment.
Photograph your passport: the Changbaishan parks, the Wanda ski card and Ice and Snow World are all real-name ticketed, and you scan the physical passport at the gate.

20:20Land at Changbaishan (the airport sits in Songjianghe, by the West Slope). The terminal opened in June 2025: 20,000 m², six gates, small enough that arrivals and the baggage belt are a few steps apart. It is twenty-odd below at night: keep the down jacket in your cabin bag and put it on before you get off.
20:40The Wanda shuttle leaves from the airport car park, timed to flight arrivals, 18 km, about 30 minutesresort site, verified Sep 2026. 🔴 Call the Westin front desk on +86-439-6986999 the day before: confirm there is a bus for an arrival after 20:00, and tell them you will reach the hotel around 21:00 — the resort site says the bus follows arrival times, but a night run is unverified and resellers say you must book ahead; do not gamble. Inside the resort the stops are where each hotel entrance meets Baiyun Road; the return shuttle boards at each hotel's front desk and times differ by hotel, so ask at check-in. If it does not work out, take a taxi or book a car in the Wanda Cultural Tourism mini-program; resort enquiries 4000-987-666.
21:15Check in at the Westin (booked; give the lead guest's name; warn them about the late arrival so the rooms are not released as a no-show). The resort's standard guest perks are, per room-night for two adults, a full-day lift pass plus ski, boot, pole and helmet rental, one Hanna hot spring visit per room, the indoor water park and the snow-play park; ski card S$4(¥20), equipment deposit ¥2,000 each2026–27 season perks page. Perks confirmed by the seller on 6 Sep: Per room, counted as two adults plus one child: 2 breakfasts a day, one child buffet breakfast, a Wanda lift ticket for every night of the stay, the Wakuku snow-play big-slope session, one Hanna hot spring entry per stay, the Wanda water park, a co-branded ski gift box, the scheduled airport shuttle and the scheduled shuttle from Changbaishan West station to the hotel. But it is priced as two adults plus one child per room, and we are five adults in two rooms — the fifth tops up at the front desk and he did not quote ittop-up amount to confirm. Ski suit S$11(¥60) a day and goggles S$8(¥40) a day are rented separately; bring your own gloves.

For beginners a private instructor each is the fastest way: Wanda ski school beginner 1-to-1, two hours about S$90(¥480), intermediate S$132(¥700), instructors graded from ¥260 to ¥2,000older Zhihu travelogue prices, confirm on site; 1-to-2 is also offered. 🔴 You only reach the resort at 21:00 on the 25th, when the ski-school desk is probably shut, so book by phone on 4000-987-666 before you fly; instructors sell out over New Year.
Morning on the snowplough stop and straight runs; afternoon up the magic carpet to the top of the beginner slope. If you can get yourself down, you have learnt to ski. 43 runs, 33 km, lifts and pass in the room rate, so no extra cost however long you stay out. Wind and glare: keep the face mask and goggles on.
15:30Skis in. Legs will ache; soak in the hotel pool or go to the water park. Dinner in the village and an early night; tomorrow's forecast decides between a second ski day and the West Slope.

Cloud or high wind: the summit shuts, so make today ski day two and consolidate yesterday's lesson; the West Slope can also be done on 29 Dec by car from Erdaobaihe (about 2 h), but that day is the North Slope, so it is one or the other.

Fair catch: this table had no trousers in it. The packing list says “windproof snow trousers” but the buying table never named a pair, and the 9 Sep order did not include any. These are lined, water-repellent and windproof, with an ankle hook so snow stays out of the boot, and one of the five pockets is fleece-lined for hands. The −11 °C rating assumes you are moving — over the base-layer bottoms already bought, they are fine for walking at −25 °C; standing still still gets cold, which is what the heat patches are for. Pull these over the SH500s: 5,000 mm waterproof and they go on without taking your boots off. Needed for the rafting day and the snowmobile run — day two of this page already says “waterproof trousers”. No need to buy ski pants: there are only two ski days and the ¥130-a-day Wanda suit includes the trousers. If you want a pair anyway it is the Wedze Ski Pants 100 −4 °C S$49.90 (5,000 mm, integrated snow gaiters, wadded lining), which is not worth it for two days
Wedze is the ski line; men's and women's, tops and bottoms all the same price. Two sets per person = S$79.60. The merino MT500 is S$49.90 a piece, twice the price for much the same warmth

The warmest five-finger glove on the site — the only one tagged very cold weather, with a leather palm, reinforced fingers and a gauntlet cuff, XS to 2XL. But no five-finger glove beats a mitten: separated fingers each shed heat, bunched fingers warm each other. The mitten on the next row is warmer and S$35 cheaper. 🔴 The pair bought was size L (order SG5V1FLL5N8Q, delivered the evening of 10 Sep) and came up small, so swap to XL. XS through 2XL are all listed and flagged as in-store; the boots in that same order (UK 9.5 / EU 44) and the parka (L short) fit, so gloves are the only swap
Warmer than the S$49.90 pair, at a third of the price. Decathlon's own line is “grouped-finger mittens … make sure your hands stay even warmer”; same high warmth rating, also waterproof and windproof, reinforced palm, S to 2XL. The trade: no independent fingers, so photos, QR payments and bootlaces all mean taking them off. Buy both — mittens as the default (Heaven Lake summit, the snowmobile run, the Moshi rime forest, the Ice and Snow World: all standing still in wind), the 550s for ski poles and anything fiddly. 1. A China plug adapter: China uses flat two- and three-pin, Singapore uses the UK three-pin, and you need to charge the night you land. Buy it before you go. 2. Lip balm and face cream: at −25 °C in dry air your lips split within two days, and this is the item Singaporeans forget. 3. Your usual medicines: cold, stomach, fever — buying them abroad wastes hours. 4. Adult touchscreen liner gloves: Decathlon Singapore has no adult pair under its own brands; all 13 search hits ship from third-party overseas sellers and the only local stock is the kids' SH500 at S$12.90. Buy these in China instead: heat patches (¥1–2 each in any supermarket), a power bank (it must carry the 3C mark — see Before You Land; most Singapore-bought banks do not, and domestic flights confiscate them), and ski goggles (¥40/day from the Wanda rental centre).
Prices read off decathlon.sg product pages on 9 Sep 2026 (the parka and boots were read on the 6th and re-checked unchanged on the 9th); they move, so trust the page at checkout. Product shots are hotlinked from Decathlon's image host and vanish if they re-shoot them. Everything above was ordered on 9 Sep 2026 and arrived on the evening of 10 Sep. A full kit per person — parka, snow boots, base layers, fleece, socks, gloves, hat — lands around S$250–300. ✅ On 30 Sep the three missing pieces were bought at Decathlon City Square, Johor Bahru: MH500 fleece RM99 + SH500 trousers RM179 + NH500 over-trousers RM49 = RM327 (≈S$102 at 1 MYR ≈ 0.313 SGD on 30 Sep; the card statement is final). International-to-domestic means immigration, reclaiming the bag, customs and a fresh check-in; nothing is through-checked to Changbaishan. Since the 16 Oct retiming you land 23:20 and fly 17:30 the next day: sleep at an airport hotel and be back at T1 by 15:00 on the 25th. Both legs are on one China Eastern ticket, so a late first leg is the airline's to rebook, but go to the China Eastern desk at Pudong yourself

Whether the Wanda shuttle runs at night is unverified: call the Westin the day before to confirm, and tell them you arrive around 21:00; failing that, a taxi for 18 km (about 30 min) or a car via the Wanda Cultural Tourism mini-program; keep the down jacket in your cabin bag

The guest details you sent read deluxe twin; the perk sheet he returned is headed deluxe king. A king room has one bed, and two of them will not sleep five adults. Have him re-confirm the room type against the hotel now, not at check-in over New Year

The seller's words: top up for the fifth at the front desk, these Wanda rooms are sold for two. So four adults' lift tickets, hot spring and breakfast sit inside the package and the fifth pays for the bed, the breakfast and the lift ticket at the desk, at a price he has not quoted. Get the number before arrival, not at the counter
