MU2215's 12:10 timing comes from Trip.com flight status on 5 Sep 2026. The 01:55 Scoot home gives you the whole of Sunday to rest before work on 4 Jan.

Leave early, fly nonstop to Xi'an

Overnight flight

• 16:30Leave the office and head straight to Changi. Scoot departs 19:15 and lands at Xi'an Xianyang (西安咸阳) at 00:45 on 25 Dec.
• Before boarding, set up the China apps: 12306, Trip.com/Ctrip, Amap, WeChat and Alipay; link a Singapore card to WeChat Pay or Alipay and make a test payment.
• Photograph your passport: Mogao, the Terracotta Army and the Shaanxi History Museum are all real-name ticketed, and you scan the physical passport at the gate.
• Scoot is a budget carrier: buy baggage and meals in advance, and bring a fleece, the cabin runs cold.

Land in Xi'an: cycle the wall, Muslim Quarter, Bell Tower after dark

• 00:45Land at Xianyang; fingerprints and an arrival card at immigration. A taxi into town is about 40 km, 50 min, around S$24 (¥130). Tell the hotel you arrive in the small hours so the room is held.
• 11:00Sleep in. The People's Grand is a 1953 landmark inside the city wall, a 15-minute walk to the South Gate.
• 13:00Eat first: yangrou paomo (羊肉泡馍, bread in lamb broth), roujiamo (肉夹馍) and biangbiang noodles; any old place by the wall beats what Singapore serves.
• 14:30Climb the wall at Yongning Gate (永宁门) and cycle the 13.7 km loop, about 1.5 h. Entry S$10 (¥54), single bike S$8 (¥45)/3 hverified. Xi'an sunset is about 17:40 in December, so go up before 16:00 and ride into dusk.
• 17:30Bell Tower (钟楼) and Drum Tower as the lights come on, then the Muslim Quarter (回民街) for street food (crowded, mind your phone), or the quieter Yongxingfang (永兴坊) to the east for snacks from every county in Shaanxi.
• 21:00Early night: tomorrow's flight is a civilised midday one, but the three Dunhuang days are long.

• 15:30Check in at The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel: Han-Tang style buildings 1.7 km from the Mingsha gate, with a rooftop that looks straight at the dunes.
• 16:15Mingsha Shan and Crescent Lake (鸣沙山月牙泉): off-season entry S$10 (¥55)verified (peak 110), booked a day ahead by real name on the official mini-program. Walk to the crescent-shaped spring first, then climb the eastern dune for sunset (about 18:21 on 26 Dec). It is windy and below −10 °C up there: neck gaiter, gloves and sunglasses.
• 19:00Back to the hotel for a hot bath, dinner at the hotel or donkey-meat noodles (驴肉黄面) in town. The park clears out around 18:00 in winter, so do not linger.

• Off-season (1 Dec–31 Mar) Mogao opens 09:00–17:00, last admission 15:10verified. Tickets are half price in winter (the peak A ticket is S$45 (¥238), so about S$22 (¥119))verified, the open caves go from 8 to 10, and two digital films plus the shuttle are included. Buy only on the official 'Mogao Grottoes reservation' site or WeChat mini-program, real name, one ticket per ID; the Dunhuang Academy authorises no third parties.
• 08:30Taxi to the Mogao Digital Exhibition Center (10 km east of town); you must arrive 30 minutes before your slot. Watch the two dome films first, then ride the shuttle out to the cliff.
• 10:00A guide takes you through 10 caves in about 2 hours; no photos and no torches inside, the guide's lamp is the only light. Cave 96 (the giant Buddha behind the nine-storey facade) and Cave 17 (the Library Cave) are the essentials. Off-season groups are small enough to hear every word.
• 13:00Lunch back in town. 14:30 Dunhuang Museum (free, closed Mondays, winter 08:30–18:00, last entry 17:00verified) to put the morning's murals back into Silk Road history.
• 18:00Shazhou night market (沙洲夜市): lamb skewers, apricot-skin drink, donkey-meat noodles, 'night-glow' jade cups. Half the stalls shut in winter, but the essentials are there.
• 'Encore Dunhuang' (又见敦煌): the show closed for the 2025–26 winter and only resumed on 28 Jan 2026, so this plan assumes it is dark; if it runs in winter 2026–27 (standard seat about S$50 (¥268)), slot it in at 20:00 tonight.

West line by private car: Yumen Pass, Han wall, Yardang 'Devil City' (Yangguan if time allows)

• There is no public transport on the west line. A 5-seat car for the day is about S$113 (¥600)estimate (going rate ¥400–600 including fuel and driver, often lower in winter), bookable through the hotel concierge or Trip.com local transfers. The loop is about 300 km; check the Dunhuang sandstorm forecast the night before.
• 08:30Depart. Town to Yumen Pass is about 90 km, 1.5 h.
• 10:00Yumen Pass (玉门关, the 'Small Square Fort'), the pass the spring wind never crosses in the Tang poem. Off-season half-price entry S$4 (¥20) (from 40) plus a S$9 (¥50) shuttleto confirm that links the fort, the Han-dynasty wall and the Hecang granary ruins.
• 12:30Another 80 km west to the yardangs; grab something at the Yumen visitor centre on the way (carry hot water and snacks, there are no real restaurants out here).
• 13:30Yardang World Geopark, the 'Devil City' (雅丹魔鬼城): off-season half-price entry S$5 (¥25) (from 50)verified plus shuttle S$13 (¥70)verified, stopping at four formations (the Golden Lion, the Sphinx, the Peacock, the 'Western Fleet'). The wind bites harder in winter: face mask, sunglasses, windproof shell, and a plastic bag over the camera against the grit. • 16:00Head back. If the driver returns via Yangguan (阳关, adds 1.5 h), entry is S$9 (¥50) plus a S$2 (¥10) shuttleto confirm and the beacon tower gives a Gobi sunset (18:22); otherwise go straight back to town by 20:00.

The shuttle stops at four viewing platforms; 15:30–17:30 is when the side light is richest, and a dusting of snow on the striped hills makes the photos. • 10:30Back to check out, walk to Zhangye West. Buy food for the ride; this one is 6.5 h.

• 21:00New Year's Eve at Datang Everbright City: the street is free, and the 2025 edition had a midnight countdown with a crowd of tens of thousands and fireworksverified (the 2026 programme will be posted on the official WeChat account). The Bell Tower holds no countdown and the core area inside the wall goes 'exit only', which is why you are staying in Qujiang and celebrating here.
• It will be packed: agree a meeting point in case you get separated, and share live location.

New Year's Day: the Terracotta Army, Huaqing Palace on the way back

• 1–3 Jan is a public holiday in China, so the Terracotta Army will be busy. Off-season (1 Dec–end Feb) entry S$23 (¥120)verified, ticket check 08:30–16:30verified; buy only on the museum's official site, WeChat account or '兵马俑票务在线', reserve ahead and be there at opening.
• 07:30Taxi 45 km to Lintong (about S$28 (¥150), 1 h), or metro line 9 to Huaqingchi then bus 613, about 1.5 h for S$1 (¥7).
• 08:30Pit 1 for the overview, then Pits 2 and 3, and the bronze chariots last; an official guide (about ¥100–200 on site) is worth it. Three hours.
• 12:30Noodles in Lintong. Huaqing Palace (华清宫), the Tang emperor's hot-spring retreat with the consort's bath and the 1936 Xi'an Incident site, is on the way back; winter pricing per the official siteto confirm. Skip it if you would rather rest.
• 17:00Back to Qujiang. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda fountain plays at 19:00 and 21:00 (off on Tuesdays)to confirm, and the mall's free shows start at 19:00.

• The Shaanxi History Museum is free but ticketed: tickets open 5 days ahead at 17:00 (so 28 Dec for 2 Jan), real-name booking on the museum's WeChat accountverified. Holiday slots vanish in seconds; if you miss out, switch to the Qin-Han branch (released at 17:30).
• 09:00In at opening: the Tang gold and silver, and the mural gallery (extra fee) are the highlights, 2.5 h.
• 12:30Lunch in Qujiang, then Daci'en Temple S$6 (¥30) and the climb up the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda S$5 (¥25)to confirm, the tower built for Xuanzang's scriptures.
• 15:00Back to the hotel to pack and nap, then a last bowl of paomo. The room is booked tonight so you keep it until 22:30 instead of sitting five hours in the lobby.

3. Hotels

31 Dec–3 Jan is China's New Year holiday and Xi'an rooms go first; lock both Xi'an hotels now on free-cancellation rates. The Silk Road Dunhuang lists around US$95 a night on Kayak, the Plaza Holiday Inn from ¥580 and the Zhangye Puyue from US$35, all platform starting rates; check the actual dates. The Hexi Corridor is dead off-season in winter, so Dunhuang, Jiayuguan and Zhangye rooms need no rush.

4. Tickets and Booking Rules

Prices converted at 1 CNY = 0.1883 SGD on 2026-09-05; the yuan price in brackets is what you pay on the ground. Dunhuang figures follow the 2025–26 winter-spring 'eight policies' (from 1 Dec 2025); the 2026–27 notice usually appears in September–October and takes precedence. Jiayuguan is the 26 Nov 2025 off-season notice; the Danxia price is the new tariff from 5 Jan 2026. Singapore passports get 30 days visa-free, so no visa is needed for this 10-day trip.

Flights (S$1,126) and hotels (S$886) are 70% of the per-person total; all the park tickets together come to just S$168, and the Mogao half-price alone saves ¥119. Savings in order: swap both Xi'an hotels for Ji Hotel / Atour (about S$90/night) to save about S$395 per person; the Scoot return is already the cheapest option. Rate 2026-09-05, 1 CNY = 0.1883 SGD.
