Why Xi'an rather than flying to Dunhuang: there is no through ticket from Singapore to Dunhuang (Google Flights only shows 2–3 stop routings of 20+ hours with no fares). Xi'an has a Scoot nonstop, and Xi'an→Dunhuang runs about 7 flights a day (China Eastern, Air Chang'an, Fuzhou Airlines) in 2.5 h. Coming back you ride the Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed line east; the last leg Zhangye West→Xi'an North is a 6.5 h bullet train, which saves a flight. Early leave on 24 Dec: Scoot departs 19:15; for an international flight you want to be at Changi 2 h ahead, so 17:15 at the airport means leaving the office around 16:30.

Flights checked on Google Flights on 5 Sep 2026. Xi'an⇄Dunhuang frequencies are the September 2026 season; the winter schedule may be thinner (Trip.com shows fares from US$63 in September; ¥700 assumed for December). MU2215's 12:10 timing comes from Trip.com flight status on 5 Sep 2026. The 01:55 Scoot home gives you the whole of Sunday to rest before work on 4 Jan.

2. Day by Day

Thu 24 Dec

Leave early, fly nonstop to Xi'an

Overnight flight
  • 16:30Leave the office and head straight to Changi. Scoot departs 19:15 and lands at Xi'an Xianyang (西安咸阳) at 00:45 on 25 Dec.

Land in Xi'an: cycle the wall, Muslim Quarter, Bell Tower after dark

Sofitel Legend People's Grand Hotel Xian · night 1
  • 00:45Land at Xianyang; fingerprints and an arrival card at immigration. A taxi into town is about 40 km, 50 min, around S$24 (¥130). Tell the hotel you arrive in the small hours so the room is held.
  • 11:00Sleep in. The People's Grand is a 1953 landmark inside the city wall, a 15-minute walk to the South Gate.
  • 13:00Eat first: yangrou paomo (羊肉泡馍, bread in lamb broth), roujiamo (肉夹馍) and biangbiang noodles; any old place by the wall beats what Singapore serves.
  • 14:30Climb the wall at Yongning Gate (永宁门) and cycle the 13.7 km loop, about 1.5 h. Entry S$10 (¥54), single bike S$8 (¥45)/3 hverified. Xi'an sunset is about 17:40 in December, so go up before 16:00 and ride into dusk.
  • 17:30Bell Tower (钟楼) and Drum Tower as the lights come on, then the Muslim Quarter (回民街) for street food (crowded, mind your phone), or the quieter Yongxingfang (永兴坊) to the east for snacks from every county in Shaanxi.
  • 21:00Early night: tomorrow's flight is a civilised midday one, but the three Dunhuang days are long.

7. Risks and Backups

Winter flight delays or cancellations in the northwest (dust, fog, de-icing) kill the 26 Dec Xi'an→Dunhuang legThe 12:10 flight already has slack; if cancelled, take one of the other 5–6 flights that day; failing that, fly the morning of 27 Dec and push Mogao to 28 Dec and the west line after, so buy a Mogao ticket you can change
Mogao's 6,000-a-day standard cap, or caves shut in a sandstorm27 Dec is a non-holiday Sunday in the off-season, so no squeeze; buy ahead on the official site. If caves close, switch to the emergency ticket (4 caves) or the 28 Dec morning, and trim the west line to Yumen Pass that afternoon
Sandstorm or road closure on the west line; fewer yardang shuttles in winterCheck the Dunhuang forecast the night before; in a blow, do Yumen Pass (closer) and move the yardangs; if the shuttle is off you cannot go past the gate, so do not force it
−12 °C drains batteries; a dead phone cannot scan inScreenshot and print every ticket; power bank inside the jacket; hand warmer on the phone
D2738 runs late on 31 Dec and misses the 19:13 arrival, wrecking New Year's EveTake the earlier D2682 09:09→15:45 (dropping the Buddha temple), or do the temple on the evening of 30 Dec before 18:00
'Encore Dunhuang' dark for the winterNot in the plan; add it to the 27 Dec evening if it runs
New Year holiday crowds at the Terracotta Army and the museumBe at the Terracotta Army at opening with tickets bought on 18 Dec; if the museum sells out, take the Qin-Han branch or the Xi'an Museum by the Small Wild Goose Pagoda
Scoot delayed on 24 Dec, or the early leave is refusedAsiana 23:10 needs no early leave; if Scoot cancels, take the next morning's flight and shorten 25 Dec in Xi'an
12306 passport verification fails, no train ticketsDo the verification in November; otherwise buy through Trip.com (with a fee) or at the station counter with your passport

9. Before You Land

ItemWhat to doStatus
12306 identity checkForeign passport holders must verify identity in the 12306 app (passport photo + face scan) before buying any train ticket; approval takes days. Do it in November, not on 14 Dec when tickets go on sale.approval time not verified
Alipay / WeChat PayBoth accept Singapore Visa/Mastercard. Link one card to each before you fly and make a test payment in Singapore. Dunhuang night-market stalls, drivers and park shuttles mostly take QR only.foreign cards verified
Mobile dataYou use CMLink (China Mobile Singapore); in China it roams on its home network. Activate the China roaming pack in the app and confirm WhatsApp and Google work; carry a backup eSIM if unsure. Long stretches of the west-line Gobi have no signal, so download offline maps.CMLink roaming scope not verified
Ride-hailingInstall DiDi (accepts foreign cards) or Amap ride-hailing; both work in Xi'an and Dunhuang town, and Amap or street taxis cover Jiayuguan and Zhangye. The west line and the three Jiayuguan sites are private-car days.verified
MapsAmap (Gaode) needs no VPN and has an English mode; the place buttons on this page open it directly. Apple Maps works in China. Google Maps is offset in China and needs a VPN; do not rely on it.verified
Power banksChina domestic flights (Xi'an→Dunhuang) require a 3C-certified power bank under 100 Wh; unmarked ones are confiscated. Buy a China-market one with the 3C mark.CAAC rule since 28 Jun 2025
ArrivalSingapore passports get 30 days visa-free; fingerprints and an arrival card at immigration. Hotels handle your stay registration.verified
CashCarry about ¥1,000; Bank of China and ICBC ATMs accept Singapore cards. Kiosks at the west-line gates sometimes take cash only.fees not verified
